Anyone still there? I took a break from baking for a few months, and now I am back at it again. November is the official new book kickoff for the year. We have a fabulous new book that we're baking from and it all looks very promising.
I chose to bake the Caramel Apple Coffee Cake. It was a complete hit, everyone loved it. I took it to work and it didn't last the day.Heatherhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16590722117879552148noreply@blogger.com12tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6655679493762656350.post-48912358652157954902014-07-21T10:20:00.001-07:002014-07-21T10:20:46.850-07:00The Cake Slice Bakers: July 2014 and Other NewsI did better this month and I'm only a day late. Considering everything that has occurred in the last month that is saying something. Which one should we start with first? The cake or the news? I'll keep you in suspense a bit more and we'll start with the cake.....
This month I made the Glazed Almond Butter Cake, and while I was a bit nervous because I know my boys and husband I was very Heatherhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16590722117879552148noreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6655679493762656350.post-76607742595413298452014-06-27T13:23:00.002-07:002014-06-27T13:23:21.391-07:00The Cake Slice Bakers: June 2014 Well at least I'm not over a month late this time. I chose to make the yellow cake because honestly it was the easiest thing, I had everything on hand and I figured it would be hard to screw up a yellow cake. It's good, and would do in a pinch.
It has a nice tight crumb and good flavor. I took it to work and the guys liked it so that is always a good thing. I didn't have a ton of time and it Heatherhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16590722117879552148noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6655679493762656350.post-68568373231456064302014-06-26T13:03:00.001-07:002014-06-26T13:03:17.309-07:00The Cake Slice Bakers: May 2014Now I realize that this is over a month late, and I've already missed the posting date for June. Well to be honest I've just been busy. That isn't a good excuse but it's what I am using since my husband and I own our own business that takes us away from home for 50+ hours each week then with the three boys, the two dogs and three cats, plus the house and the yard - I'm just a little stretched Heatherhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16590722117879552148noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6655679493762656350.post-72610065653325390692014-04-20T16:25:00.000-07:002014-04-20T16:25:12.182-07:00The Cake Slice Bakers April 2014: Coconut Layer CakeGood Morning and Happy Easter! He is Risen!!
This month's cake is what I would call our first real "cake" it's a true layer cake and frosting. I made mine early knowing that it would be perfect for Easter but figuring that since all but one cake in this book has been a flop for me that I didn't want to take that chance. The cake had good flavor, but it was best eaten the day of or next day as Heatherhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16590722117879552148noreply@blogger.com10tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6655679493762656350.post-57148205357682300432014-03-20T03:00:00.000-07:002014-04-23T12:29:38.286-07:00The Cake Slice Bakers March 2014: Espresso Cake with Hot Kahlua SyrupWow it's already been a month since our last cake. This year seems to be flying past and I don't have the time to do half the things that I want to or need to do. I normally bake each months cake just as soon as I can - one to get it out of the way and two because I am excited to see what it tastes like. Well this one I wasn't excited about - other than the Kahlua that is always exciting. When we voted last month I was so excited for this cake. I thought this is exactly what we need a bit of spring in all the darkness and dampness of the Oregon winter. Plus it helps that I love lemon and not just a little. Now I'm not someone who will eat them raw or drink lemon juice straight, but give me a lemon cake or lemon bars and make them as lemony as you want and I am good Heatherhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16590722117879552148noreply@blogger.com11tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6655679493762656350.post-49174438422231029002014-01-20T03:00:00.000-08:002014-01-20T03:00:10.793-08:00The Cake Slice Bakers January 2014 : Pound CakeToday is the 20th of January which means two things. One: it's the reveal date for our newest cake. Two: today is my birthday, which I think it's fitting that the cake that I voted for last month actually won :) Today is a big birthday for me - no it's not one of those that ends in a 0 it's a 5 and those almost seem bigger to me than the other. You've reached that halfway part - like you're Heatherhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16590722117879552148noreply@blogger.com16tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6655679493762656350.post-25581152473200070232013-12-22T10:50:00.001-08:002013-12-22T10:54:16.333-08:00The Cake Slice Bakers December 2013: Streusel SquaresThis is our second cake now out of our new book and like November's cake it is much more of a breakfast type cake something to serve at brunch or after church.
The boys enjoyed this cake. Though I probably won't make it again as I have several recipes just like it that I prefer. It was good, and I would recommend it to anyone who needs a good recipe.
Sorry I'm not very wordy today.....see Heatherhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16590722117879552148noreply@blogger.com12tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6655679493762656350.post-29813832446427383972013-11-20T19:33:00.003-08:002013-11-20T19:33:54.480-08:00The Cake Slice Bakers November 2013: Applesauce Spice Cake
A new year has begun with the Cake Slice Bakers and that means we have a new book too. I am excited about our new book and I hope you are too. It's Great Cakes by Carole Walter. There were so many wonderful cake books out there to choose from but in the end this one was it.
Our first cake of the year is an Applesauce Spice Cake. I can't say that Heatherhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16590722117879552148noreply@blogger.com15tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6655679493762656350.post-86995445763247779002013-10-20T07:20:00.003-07:002013-10-20T07:24:45.321-07:00The Cake Slice October 2013: The Harvey WallbangerThis was our last month to bake out of Vintage Cakes, since it's the last month we each get to choose our own cake to bake. This has been a great book to bake from. I missed several months of baking but the ones that I did manage to bake turned out pretty well. I had several months of ooohh's and aahhs, and a few of eewws too. Either way I've enjoyed this book and I am so glad I have it in my Heatherhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16590722117879552148noreply@blogger.com15tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6655679493762656350.post-4145929550725378552013-09-23T16:34:00.001-07:002013-09-23T16:34:30.761-07:00The Cake Slice Bakers September 2013: Butterscotch Roll Up CakeIt is that wonderful time of the month where I get to show what we've been up to the last month, this month we baked a beautiful Butterscotch Roll Up Cake. The cake was delicious, but what really set it off was the butterscotch sauce and the frosting. My fellow Cake Slice Bakers did a much better job of showing it off, please go visit them and tell them how beautiful they are. Mine was tasty, butHeatherhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16590722117879552148noreply@blogger.com9tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6655679493762656350.post-82257488941967377552013-08-20T19:50:00.002-07:002013-08-20T19:50:35.840-07:00The Cake Slice Bakers August 2013: Maple Pecan Chiffon CakeFor August we were challenged to make a chiffon cake with brown sugar and brown butter icing. The cake and icing was simple enough to put together, I did end up with a bit of an issue with the icing being to thick, but really just the whole cake was off. No one in my family enjoyed it, and the icing was super sweet, so after a bite each the remaining cake went for chicken food.

Some months you are surprised by which cake wins and then you worry about if it will be eaten. Those are always the ones that go the best.
This month I did not think I would have worry since I already knew my family like Boston cream pie. This is a very dense cake that is very delicious.
Since last fall we've been baking out of this. It's worth it and I Heatherhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16590722117879552148noreply@blogger.com11tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6655679493762656350.post-19291968425387033772013-05-20T05:41:00.000-07:002013-05-20T05:41:35.401-07:00The Cake Slice Baker's May Cake: The Pink CakeThis month's cake was super easy to make and just as easy to eat. I made it after work and had planned on taking better pictures the next day but that didn't happen. The cake is better after it sits for a day, the favors just intensify. Next time I would skip the dark cocoa powder and go for regular as the cake had that dark chocolate bitterness taste to it, which Hubby doesn't really like.

I've decided that is space will be for my challenges only. Right now I need my private life to be private and I am not cooking/baking/creating anything new right now due to my time limitations. Maybe someday I will do something more with it, but for now that will have to be all there is.

Hello to anyone who is still out there, it's been a LONG time, over 6 months and creeping up on 7. We won't get into that today, instead I want to share with you this simple delicious cake that I made on Monday, we'll put it this way I am surprised there is anything left this morning.

More over, wondering when I will have the nerve to go through with it. Emmy my 18 y/o cat is at that point. The one where I know I should do something, but I can't. I know that this isn't about me and it's about her, but I can't let her go yet. It was super simple to make a quite delicious too. Well we really aren't fans of coffee at this house (unless it's my homemade Kahlua) so I subbed out the espresso beans for vanilla beans and then added a touch of Kahlua to it in the end. It was delicious with just a hint of that Kahlua flavor.
