Laundry Soap

All I can say is that it works great. I haven't had any issues with and the clothes, towels, sheets and blankets all have come out clean. Really it will take a bit longer to know how good of a job it's really doing, but so far things are looking good.

The recipe I used is here, but I will give it to you too.

Laundry Soap
makes 10 gallons

1 cup washing soda
1/2 cup borax
1 bar of soap
1 5 gallon bucket

Grate soap on box grater and melt over medium heat in 4 cups of water, In a 5 gallon bucket fill half way with hot tap water, then add in washing soda and borax. Add in the bar soap when melted, give it a good stir then fill the remaining way with hot water. Let sit overnight to gel. This is your concentrate. You will need another container to dilute it by half. Use 5 ounces of the diluted mix. Make sure you give it a good shake before using because it can/will gel again.

Good luck and enjoy!

  1. Interesting!
I'm not sure I'll try it because it will just add something else for me to do and I try to limit myself, lol, but I'm impressed! :)

  2. Years ago I made my own powdered laundry detergent as it was much cheaper to do myself. I'm curious what the advantage is to making this yourself with this method? Do you feel you save money?

  3. Nicole, I am trying to save money, as we do a lot of laundry in our house. I just started so dependant on how long the 5 gallons will last will depend on how I feel about the cost savings, but so far so good. This was the method that was recommened to me from a few friends, that is why I am trying this recipe.

  4. Where do you find the washing soda and borax? I've never seen these things in our local stores. Just curious. My latest laundry detergent that I found at County Market is working well and it costs $2.50 per 1/2 gallon which I didn't think was bad. :)
